Personal History Box

While I feel more comfortable in my painting and drawing skills, I do have experience in making three-dimensional, mixed-media art. The corresponding images show an art piece completed for a Women's Studies Class during my Undergraduate Degree. The art is a 'Personal History Box,' with its sybolisms and intersecting concepts pertinent to the experiences I have had in life.

For the project, I was bound in Duct Tape, tightly enclosed by each layer that was wrapped around me. I was cut out of this cast and it kept the shape of my body. I then took an old copy of my favorite novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles and glued scraps of the pages onto the form. A final coat of glazing sturdied this replica of my body. A similar process was incorporated for the creation of the arm.

The ribs and isolated hand were modeled with clay and layers of paint. Through partially concealed tubing that was attached to a Nebulizer, an ethereal mist escaped through the confines of the body cast.

Varying linens, clothes, and drapes were utilized, as well as rope and ribbon. Books and an antique composition doll also make a presence. Whether it is the shepherd's crook, PVC pipe, or hard tubing wrapped in words by Thomas Hardy, structural and decorative elements obtain sybolism that is pertinent to different stages of my life.
