Out of the Closet, Out of the Sacristy, Into Ex-Gay Conversion Therapy: Re-conceptualizing Christian Homophobia and Christian-Sanctioned Ex-Gay Conversion Therapy. This paper uses poetry and theory to critically analyze gay conversion therapy. It parallels conversion therapy with state carceral systems, drawing upon their similarities to understand the experiences of those who have endured Christian-sanctioned ex-gay therapy.
Response to the texts by Lena Palacios, Jessi Lee Jackson, and Elizabeth Bernstein. This paper looks at the intersections between sexual abuse, state carceral systems, and means by which certain bodies are criminalized.
Response to the texts by Jennifer Nash and Tan Hoang Nguyen. I synthesize Nash's scholarship on black female pleasure and her insistence on utilizing the visual field as a site for feminist and social justice potential. I also discuss the power within her recommendations for black women to resist the trauma-recovery scholarship they are often relegated to. My tracing of Nguyen's text conveys his assertion that ascribing male effeminacy to certain individuals is, in fact, a racialized enterprise.
Response to the Marlon Riggs, Che Gossett, and Cathy Cohen Articles. In this paper, I look at the activism generated by marginalized communities and how they are often not given credit for that activism, despite their endeavors substantiating social justice movements.
Response to the Keguro Macharia, Marlon Ross, and Jason Ritchie Articles
Response to the Roderick Ferguson, Sandy Stone, and Nayan Shah Articles
Response to Morgenson and Ochoa Articles. These texts led me to think about citizenship and civil society as well as settler colonialism.
Response to the Somerville, McClintock, and Towle & Morgan Articles. This response leads me to reflect on the racialized foundations of our current understandings of queer sexuality. The concealed undertones of race within queer discourse necessitate the simultaneous discussion of race within queer sexuality. Just as race must be discussed when talking about sexuality, sexuality must be discussed when talking about race.
"The Body and the Psyche, the Body and Language, the Body and Social Reading." This presentation synthesizes readings by Readings by Salamon, Enke, and Snorton.
